What type of leader do you aspire to be? How would you like to make your team feel when working with you?

These are some essential questions to ask yourself before starting your leadership journey.

What is Leadership

There seems to be confusion about the differences between leaders and managers. We tend to add these terms together, but these concepts have different meanings and outcomes.

According to recent studies, a leader sets a goal for their team and motivates them to achieve it. The organization sets these goals, and leaders are in charge of showing the best direction and tools necessary for their team to achieve these goals.

On the other hand, there are different preferred types of leadership depending on the organizational culture. For example, in the U.S. and Canada, it is perceived that a good leader will have a more democratic/ permissive approach. However, in the middle east, there is a perspective that a more autocratic leader is the best option for an organization. In this case, organizations must adjust their leadership styles to their culture and consider how this will affect their employees.

Task-oriented leadership

The Task-Oriented leader has a more " hands-on" dynamic in the workplace. A task-oriented leader will show employees the most effective way to do their daily duties and incorporate themselves into the process. These leaders practice open communication on what they expect from their team and will show best practices by being the example of an efficient employee. This leader will encourage their employees to be creative and share ideas on improving daily tasks, which will benefit the organization to be more innovative and successful.

Relations-oriented leadership

The relations-oriented leader's primary focus is the well-being of their team. This type of leader will create a space for employees to feel safe in their work environment and create leaders within the team. The relations-oriented leader creates a space for open communication, which helps employees feel comfortable expressing their goals for their roles. This leader provides a sense of security that will retain employees to grow and develop within the company.

Change Oriented leadership

The Change-oriented leader is the type of leader that is open to change and adapts to a constantly changing job market. One of the essential skills of a leader and entrepreneur is the ability to adapt to change and find ways to improve processes. This leader will maintain the organization's relevancy and motivate employees to be creative, find innovative solutions to new problems, and continue to innovate.

Authentic leadership

Research explains the benefits of authentic leadership and how it can prevent employee burnout. Authentic leadership can also be called " relational transparency." This type of leader will make their intentions very clear on what they will need from their employees and provide constant constructive feedback. Authentic leaders are also self-aware of how they can help their employees feel safe in their work environment and become leaders themselves. With this leadership strategy, researchers confirmed that employees showed fewer signs of burnout and a higher rate of employee satisfaction in the workplace.
